About PPHPZ

People’s Process on Housing and Poverty in Zambia (PPHPZ) is a local NGO that was established in 2005 to support the work of grassroots movements, such as Zambia Homeless & Poor People’s Federation (ZHPPF), Know Your City TV, ABESU Housing Cooperative, and Informal Settlement Networks. These formidable grassroots agglomerations have a membership of over 49,000 across 44 municipalities in Zambia. PPHPZ is an affiliate of Slum Dwellers International (SDI).

Our Mission

A society in which poor and homeless people have access to decent, affordable housing; basic services; and sustainable livelihoods.

Our Vision

To improve access to land, decent housing, basic services, livelihoods in urban, peri-urban and rural communities in Zambia through innovative community-led initiatives and community managed revolving funds for sustained development.

Core Values

The People's Process on Housing and Poverty in Zambia is committed to:
• Equality
• Accountability
• Innovation and Learning
• Sustainability
• Team Work and Partnerships

Our key guiding principles

Prioritising the poor in solutions

The poor have to be at the centre of the strategies and processes that address poverty.

What works for the poor works for all

The resources of the poor themselves are a critical component of any strategy for poverty reduction

Resources for the poor are key to improving their resilience

Communities should mobilize their limited resources through savings to complement external support, ensuring sustainability and enhancing ownership of interventions

Our methodologies to achieve
inclusive & sustainable settlements

Women

Women are critical for a gender sensitive strategy of community organising

Participatory slum upgrading

Incremental and in-situ upgrading gives impetus to longer term infrastructure improvements

Partnerships

Partnerships leverage resources and impact policy

Data collection

Settlement profiles, enumerations and GIS maps enable communities to have an empirical basis to negotiate with government.

Savings

Savings build trust, accumulative resources and leverage external contributions.

Exchanges

Exchanges foster horizontal learning and mobilisation
